In 1980, a grand idea was conceived when Jean-Marc Natel, Claude-Michel Schönberg, and Alain Boubil wrote the original stage script for Les Misérables (previously in the French language). Based on Victor Hugo’s late book of the same title, the plot of Les Mis was adapted into a live stage adaptation performed as a fully lyricized play, which was an enormous achievement in that time period.

After a limited season performed in French in Paris, there was already overwhelming support to create a more accessible show, and once Cameron Macikintosh listened to the musical score, he instantly fell in love and agreed to write an English adaptation while working with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who wrote the translated song numbers. The English staging of Les Misérables initially premiered with a two-month duration at the Barbican Centre, but as a result of its financial success and larger audience with the English version, the musical unsurprisingly moved to West End’s Palace Theatre in 1985, a more bustling and premier location, and ran for close to two decades. Les Mis then moved once again to another venue, the Queen’s Theatre (which was eventually refurbished and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and carries on with its shows up until today. If you include all its productions since its inception four decades ago, Les Mis is as it happens, the longest-running stage play so far in this generation.

With almost 40 years in London on its own and not even counting its shows in international locations, including its well-received Broadway seasons, it is incontrovertible that Les Mis continues to be unbelievable in the perspective of the musical’s fanbase. The narrative and the rich and touching soundtrack, which revolves around justice, sacrifice, and selfless love, elevates the musical's quality due to the evident heart behind each song and act staged. Les Misérables has become so critically-acclaimed that the show has been adapted to films several times and received very positively even on a separate medium.

This approaching February’s season of Les Misérables carries it to Texas, where the show will be performed on Tuesday 4th February 2025, in Bass Concert Hall, Austin. For a sung-through musical like this, fans all attest to how Bass Concert Hall is the favorite venue due to its sound construction and acoustics, in addition to a spacious stage platform to have the musical.
