More than 40 years ago, history was being made when Alain Boubil, Jean-Marc Natel, and Claude-Michel Schönberg wrote the very first play screenplay for the now-famous musical, Les Misérables (initially in French). Created from Victor Hugo’s 1862 book of the same title, Les Mis was adapted and turned into a theater play as a fully lyricized play, which was a unique approach to stagecraft in that era.

Following an initial showing in Paris, France, there was evidently overwhelming support to create an English show, and when Cameron Macikintosh listened to the soundtrack, he was so inspired and decided to produce an English version in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who composed the new song numbers. The English production of Les Misérables at first performed with a two-month duration at the Barbican Centre, but as a result of its astounding success and positive reviews from critics, the musical unsurprisingly moved to West End’s Palace Theatre in just two months, a more bustling and superior location, and ran for almost 20 years. The West End play then relocated once more to another location, the Queen’s Theatre (which was eventually renovated and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and maintains its shows up until present day. If you include all its tours since its first showing four decades ago, Les Misérables is as it happens, the longest-running musical so far in this generation.

With 37 years in London on its own and not even counting its tours in foreign countries, including and definitely not limited to its well-received Broadway seasons, it is undeniable that this global hit endures and is unforgettable in the viewpoint of the musical’s fanbase. The plot and the fully sung-through score, which revolves around redemption, sacrifice, and unrequited love, tugs on a viewer's heartstrings due to the apparent emotion beneath the surface of each character and act performed. The musical has become so famous that the play has been converted to motion pictures numerous times and gained loyal fanbases even on a different medium.

This approaching February’s season of Les Misérables carries it to Texas, where the show will be performed on Friday 7th February 2025, in Bass Concert Hall, Austin. For fully lyricized show like Les Mis, locals all attest to how Bass Concert Hall is the premier option because of its audio engineering and acoustics, in addition to a magnificent stage platform to host the musical.
