More than 40 years ago, history was being made when Jean-Marc Natel, Claude-Michel Schönberg, and Alain Boubil prepared the initial stage script for Les Misérables (originally in French). Based on Victor Hugo’s late book of the identical title, the plot of Les Mis was transformed into a musical performed as a show only sung from start to finish, which was monumental in that era.

Following a limited season performed in French in Paris, France, there was already overwhelming support to make a more accessible show, and once Cameron Macikintosh listened to the soundtrack, he was so inspired and agreed to produce an English interpretation while working with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who wrote the translated song numbers. The English staging of the musical initially performed with a two-month period at the Barbican Centre, but because of its impressive success and positive reviews from critics, the show unsurprisingly relocated to West End’s Palace Theatre in 1985, a significantly more premier theater, and remained there for almost 20 years. Les Mis then moved once more to another venue, the Queen’s Theatre (which after some time was remade and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and maintains its shows up until today. Counting all its runs since its inception four decades ago, Les Mis is as it happens, the longest-running musical so far in this generation.

With almost 4 decades in London on its own and not even enumerating its tours in international cities, including its sold-out shows on Broadway, it is incontrovertible that Les Mis perseveres and is breathtaking in the viewpoint of the play's fanbase. The narrative and the fully sung-through score, which revolves around justice, passion, and unrequited love, always brings each viewer to tears due to the apparent emotion beneath the surface of each character and act presented. Les Mis has become so successful that the play has been turned into motion pictures numerous times and received very positively even on a separate platform.

This coming February’s production of Les Misérables has it in Texas, where the show will be running on Saturday 8th February 2025, in Bass Concert Hall, Austin. For fully lyricized show like Les Misérables, theatergoers all attest to how Bass Concert Hall is the leading venue because of its audio engineering and acoustics, as well as a grand constructed stage to host the musical.
