Moulin Rouge - The Musical

Set in the Bohemian period during the late 19th century, Moulin Rouge! The Musical was heavily based on French history. The musical can be found in and is focused on retelling the dealings of true-to-life nightclub in Montmartre, Paris, called the Moulin Rouge, where the underground aristocratic life was revealed. By the late 1900s, the Moulin Rouge nightclub became famous for its French Cabaret elegance – lively, full of spirit, and a somewhat crazy lifestyle. This Parisian venue that the show was created from also impacted the production's preparation, with Baz Luhrmann and the Broadway play's team mentioning that they did take pieces of the late 1900s period, and it can decisively be viewed in the production. The set design, costume design, classical renditions, and song and dance numbers (which features a lot of can-can dance) all obviously show reverence and respect to the film version of Moulin Rouge.

It is in this decade of history leading up to the 1900s and right in the middle of the French La Belle Époque, a duration thought to be the pinnacle of high artistic and cultural development, where the romantic tale of two lovers finally begins. Christian, an American writer who journeys to France seeking a successful passion, meets Satine, the best performer of the Moulin Rouge. The couple, despite both external and internal challenges, fall madly in love and settle for a concealed relationship with each other due to their lack of standing and power.

Ironically, the time of La Belle Époque was denounced by even locals not as a time of cultural and artistic development. Historians are convinced that this decade were all about the elite's triumph over the poor. the Broadway musical, however, chose to present the decade in a more endearing light by instead presenting the romantic Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love, as witnessed through Christian and Satine’s fight for love throughout the play.

In this decade, theatre fans have the opportunity to be part of the entertainment most likely also reveled in by the original patrons of the Moulin Rouge, as Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be produced at an equally vibrant and incredible venue, Bass Concert Hall. With interior decor just as sprightly as the set design that it is staging, Bass Concert Hall is the ideal fit for Moulin Rouge’s limited season on Sunday 18th May 2025.
