Four decades ago, a grand idea was conceived when Jean-Marc Natel, Claude-Michel Schönberg, and Alain Boubil created the very first play script for the now-famous musical, Les Misérables (originally in the French language). Created from Victor Hugo’s late book of the matching name, Les Misérables was transformed into a musical performed as a fully lyricized play, which was an enormous achievement in that time period.
After a limited season performed in French in Paris, there was evidently overwhelming support to make an English adaptation, and when Cameron Macikintosh heard the soundtrack, he was so inspired and agreed to write an English interpretation hand in hand with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who composed the translated songs. The English version of Les Mis at first performed with a two-month duration at the Barbican Centre, but due to its financial success and positive reviews from critics, the musical rapidly moved to West End’s Palace Theatre in due time, a significantly more top venue, and was performed for close to two decades. The West End play then relocated one more time to another theater, the Queen’s Theatre (which after some time was remade and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in 2019), and carries on with its shows up until present day. Adding together all its tours since its creation in 1980, Les Misérables is as it happens, the longest-running musical in the entire world.
With almost 4 decades in London's West End on its own and not even listing its shows in foreign cities, especially its acclaimed Broadway runs, it is with certainty that Les Mis continues to be unsurpassed in the eyes of the show's audiences. The plot and the fully sung-through score, which revolves around justice, sacrifice, and selfless love, always brings each viewer to tears because of the evident passion behind the mask of each character and act staged. Les Mis has become so famous that it has been adapted to motion pictures numerous times and gained loyal fanbases even on a separate platform.
This upcoming February’s production of Les Misérables brings it to Texas, where the show will be performed on Wednesday 5th February 2025, in Bass Concert Hall, Austin. For fully lyricized show like this, locals can agree that Bass Concert Hall is the finest venue because of its sound design and acoustic range, as well as a grand stage platform to hold the musical.
