In 1980, a grand idea was conceived when Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boubil, and Jean-Marc Natel prepared the initial play screenplay for the stage adaptation, Les Misérables (initially in French). Stemming from Victor Hugo’s late novel of the matching title, the plot of Les Mis was transformed and turned into a musical as a show only sung from start to finish, which was an enormous achievement in that era.

Following a limited season performed in French in Paris, France, there was obviously overwhelming support to make a more accessible adaptation, and once Cameron Macikintosh discovered the soundtrack, he was so inspired and decided to create an English interpretation hand in hand with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who wrote the English lyrics. The English production of the musical initially debuted with a two-month run at the Barbican Centre, but due to its impressive success and positive reviews from critics, the show quickly transferred to West End’s Palace Theatre in just two months, a significantly more top theater, and remained there for 19 years. The West End play then moved once more to another theater, the Queen’s Theatre (which after some time was renovated and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and carries on with its shows up until present day. If you include all its runs since its creation four decades ago, Les Mis is as it happens, the longest-running musical of all time.

With almost 4 decades in West End on its own and not even enumerating its productions in other countries, especially its sold-out shows on Broadway, it is undeniable that Les Mis endures and is unsurpassed in the eyes of the play's attendees. The storyline and the epic musical score, which revolves around justice, sacrifice, and unrequited love, always brings each viewer to tears because of the apparent emotion beneath the surface of each character and act performed. The musical has become so critically-acclaimed that it has been converted to motion pictures several times and has been met with glowing reviews even on another medium.

This coming February’s production of Les Mis brings it to Texas, where the show will be running on Sunday 9th February 2025, in Bass Concert Hall, Austin. For a sung-through musical like this, locals all attest to how Bass Concert Hall is the favorite option because of its sound construction and acoustic range, as well as a magnificent stage to hold the play.
