Moulin Rouge – The Musical at Bass Concert Hall

In 2019, debuting at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 film Moulin Rouge was converted into the well-loved musical adaptation in Broadway. Originally produced by Baz Luhrmann, it was brought to the stage by Tony Awardees and cast members like Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who were the original cast members of Christian and Satine respectively, and production crew including director Alex Timbers and music numbers and medleys by Justine Levine, behind the main stage.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a show filled with happiness amidst tragic love that presents to us all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the end of the 19th century and at the height of Bohemianism, during the period of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, searches for his path to success. He dreams to set in motion a chance to succeed as a writer and moves to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two local acquaintances, Lautrec and Santiago, who influence him to create a musical that they can showcase. It is in the underbelly of Moulin Rouge where he meets Satine, the performer of the the infamous nightclub that captures his attention. Their developing love however meets a haughty competitor in the form of the boastful and greedy Duke of Monroth, who is promised Satine by the nightclub’s proprietor Harold Zidler, in agreement for a large financial expenditure to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and pay off the nightclub's debts. So starts Christian and Satine’s struggle for love on the musical stage.

Basically a love tale that remains sweet and praiseworthy in current times, the show is also a mixture of both ballads and pop music, incorporating numbers not just from the Baz Luhrmann's original, but also musical mash-ups and renditions from modern songs that were injected into the plot of the play.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be running for a limited season on May at Tuesday 13th May 2025, at Bass Concert Hall.
