Set in the artistic period during the turn of the 20th century, Moulin Rouge! The Musical was heavily taken from French history. The play is set in and is all about the dealings of true-to-life nightclub in Montmartre, Paris, titled the Moulin Rouge, where the underground aristocratic life was revealed. By the late 1900s, the nightclub became well-known for its French Cabaret style – vibrant, full of spirit, and pure party entertainment. This Parisian venue that the musical was based on also affected the production, with Baz Luhrmann and the musical's creators mentioning that they did take parts of the late 1900s time period, and it can decisively be viewed in the production. The set, costume design, musical arrangements, and song and dance numbers (which sees a lot of can-can dance) all obviously show reverence and respect to the film version of Moulin Rouge.

It is in this period of history leading up to the 1900s and right in the middle of the French La Belle Époque, a period considered to be the height of high artistic and cultural development, where the romantic story of two lovers finally happens. Christian, an American writer who journeys to Paris, France aiming for a successful career, meets Satine, the top performer of the Moulin Rouge. Christian and Satine, despite both external and internal challenges, fall deeply in love and have to be a secret relationship with each other because of the Duke of Monroth's intervention.

Contrary to other accounts, the period of La Belle Époque was criticized by even locals not as a time of peace and harmony. Many are of the opinion that this decade were all about the elite's triumph over the poor. Moulin Rouge! The Musical, however, chose to capture the decade in a more positive light by instead presenting the hopeful Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love, as witnessed through Christian and Satine’s evolving love story throughout the play.

In this decade, viewers and audiences have the opportunity to relive the entertainment most likely also loved by the original patrons of the Moulin Rouge, as Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be showing at an equally lively and amazing venue, Bass Concert Hall. With interior decor just as beautiful as the set design that it is holding, Bass Concert Hall is the perfect fit for Moulin Rouge’s limited production on Wednesday 14th May 2025. Seats are now available for purchase through the links that can be found at the top of this page.
