Before its debut in 2019, Moulin Rouge! The Musical had to meet high expectations of exceeding or at least being at par with the previous movie produced before it. As viewers can attest to, the Broadway stage adaptation has more than lived up to the name with an immensely positive reception from both fans and critics alike. Broadway World’s Miranda Keating even lauded the musical after reviewing, in quote, “Truthfully, as as I entered the theatre, I was instantly immersed into the beauty of what was designed as 19th century Paris. When all was said and done, I initially had no words. I was absolutely enamored with what I just watched.” The musical carries on its productions to date, now in Austin and to be produced at Bass Concert Hall on Thursday 15th May 2025, Bass Concert Hall known as one of the city's best show venues with complete lighting and sound design, large seating capacity, and modern furnishings both for the interior and exterior of the venue.
The play's narrative itself is a rollercoaster with extreme emotion following Christian and Satine, an American writer travels to Montmartre to jumpstart his career as a writer and composer, and a star entertainer in the Moulin Rouge nightclub, respectively. Christian and Satine begin a secret affair as they get closer to each other, and it is in their entanglement that they go back and forth as they try to unsuccessfully stop themselves, though what they feel trumps any hurdle they face.
In the approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes of the whole musical, this story is presented mostly through music, with incredible musical scoring from the creative team, which is a mixture of mash-ups, medleys, and even classical numbers. Manchester Media Group was quoted that Moulin Rouge is “an experience for the senses as soon as you arrive.” From the colorful opening number up to the last performance, the musical’s brilliance reveals itself; add to that the fact that even the cast is composed of singer heavyweights like Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo originating the characters of Christian and Satine and you have a worldwide phenomenon on your hands.
