Moulin Rouge - The Musical

Bass Concert Hall

In 2019, premiering at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 movie Moulin Rouge was transformed into the now-famed live staging in Broadway. Originally written and directed by Baz Luhrmann, it was brought to the stage by Tony Awardees and cast members including Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who originated the roles of Christian and Satine respectively, and production crew including director Alex Timbers and music arrangements and orchestrations by Justine Levine, behind the curtain.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a play exemplifying young passion, love, and loss that touches on all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the turn of the 20th century and at the height of Bohemianism, during the period of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, looks for his dream and inspiration. He dreams to begin a chance to succeed as a writer and moves to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two new friends, Lautrec and Santiago, who tell him to write a musical that they can showcase. It is in the underbelly of Moulin Rouge where he meets Satine, the star of the the infamous nightclub that catches his eye and heart. Their budding relationship however meets an almost insurmountable obstacle in the form of the wealthy and corrupt Duke of Monroth, who is pledged Satine by the nightclub’s proprietor Harold Zidler, in agreement for a considerable financial investment to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and pay off the nightclub's debts. So begins Christian and Satine’s secret and tragic love affair on the musical stage.

Fundamentally a classical tale that remains relatable and relevant in current times, Moulin Rouge is also a combination of both old and new music, combining numbers not just from the original film adaptation, but also performance mash-ups and arrangements from modern songs that were injected into the narrative of the musical.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be available for a limited season on May at Saturday 17th May 2025, at Bass Concert Hall.
