During its brainstorming stage, Moulin Rouge! The Musical needed to take on the challenge of exceeding or at least being at equal footing with the original film of the same name. As viewers can attest to, the Broadway stage adaptation has ensured that it is here to stay with repeated standing ovations from both fans and critics alike. Broadway World’s Miranda Keating even lauded the musical after viewing, in quote, “Truthfully, as as the curtain was pulled back, I was immediately immersed into the magical, beautiful world of the Moulin Rouge. When the production ended, I originally had no words. I was absolutely enamored with what I just watched.” The Broadway hit carries on its productions to date, now available in Austin and to be produced at Bass Concert Hall on Tuesday 20th May 2025, Bass Concert Hall being one of the country's top entertainment venues with complete lighting and sound design, large seating capacity, and modern furnishings both in and out of the theatre.
The musical's plot itself is your classic and tragic love story focused on Christian and Satine, an American composer travels to Paris to find out his dream and path in life, and a star entertainer in the Moulin Rouge nightclub, respectively. They fall madly in love as they become more acquainted with each other, and it is in their affair that they endanger themselves because of a jealous benefactor, though fate continues to bring them closer together.
In the running time of 2 hours and 45 minutes of the whole play, this story is presented mainly through song and dance, with breathtaking musical scoring from the production, which is a blend of mash-ups, medleys, and even classic tunes. Manchester Media Group was quoted that Moulin Rouge is “an audio and visual masterpiece that translated beautifully on stage.” From the colorful opening number up to the last performance, the musical’s brilliance is very evident; add to that the fact that even the cast members are composed of singer Broadway veterans including Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo leading the characters of Christian and Satine and you have another Broadway gem on your hands.
