Moulin Rouge - The Musical

Bass Concert Hall

Set in the Bohemian period during the turn of the 20th century, Moulin Rouge! The Musical was heavily based on French history. The play takes places and is centered around the happenings of an actual nightclub in Montmartre, Paris, named the Moulin Rouge, where the underground aristocratic life was revealed. By the turn of the 20th century, the nightclub became famous for its French Cabaret style – vibrant, loose, and pure party entertainment. This Parisian entertainment venue that the musical was created from also influenced the production, with Baz Luhrmann and the show's team stating that they did take parts of the actual French history, and it can assuredly be seen in the production. The set, costumes, music score, and choreography (which features a lot of can-can dance) all clearly pay homage to to the original Moulin Rouge.

It is in this period of history leading up to the 1900s and right in the middle of the French La Belle Époque, a duration pointed to as the pinnacle of high artistic and cultural development, where the forbidden affair of two lovers finally begins. Christian, an American writer who journeys to Paris, France searching for a successful passion, meets Satine, the favorite performer of the Moulin Rouge. The pair, despite many oncoming trials and tribulations, fall crazily in love and have to be a concealed relationship with each other due to their lack of standing and power.

Ironically, the period of La Belle Époque was denounced by historians not as a time period of peace and harmony. Historians believe that these years were all about the elite's triumph over the poor. the Broadway play, however, chose to capture the time period in a more endearing viewpoint by instead presenting the romantic Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love, as seen through Christian and Satine’s evolving love story throughout the play.

In more recent years, theatre fans have the chance to be part of the show most likely also reveled in by the original patrons of the Moulin Rouge, as Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be showing at an equally vibrant and impressive venue, Bass Concert Hall. With interior decor just as sprightly as the set design that it is hosting, Bass Concert Hall is the best fit for Moulin Rouge’s limited showing on Wednesday 21st May 2025. Seats are now available for purchase through the links that can be found at the top of this page.
