Moulin Rouge – The Musical at Bass Concert Hall

In 2019, debuting at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 motion picture Moulin Rouge was modified into the well-loved live staging in Broadway. Originally created by Baz Luhrmann, it was brought to the stage by award-winning cast members like Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who originated the roles of Christian and Satine respectively, and production crew including director Alex Timbers and music numbers and medleys by Justine Levine, behind the curtain.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is an adaptation full of happiness amidst tragic love that touches on all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the end of the 1800s and at the pinnacle of Bohemianism, during the period of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, searches for his path to success. He dreams to set in motion a chance to succeed as a writer and moves to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two new friends, Lautrec and Santiago, who advise him to pen a musical that they can flaunt. It is in the underbelly of the Moulin Rouge nightclub where he meets Satine, the performer of the the renowned entertainment venue that he wishes to get to know more. Their forbidden romance however encounters a haughty competitor in the persona of the boastful and greedy Duke of Monroth, who is promised Satine by the nightclub’s promoter Harold Zidler, in agreement for a substantial financial trade-off to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and pay off the nightclub's debts. So begins Christian and Satine’s tale of love and loss on the Broadway stage.

Fundamentally a classical tale that remains sweet and praiseworthy in current times, the musical is also a melting pot of both ballads and pop music, putting together songs not just from the original film adaptation, but also performance mash-ups and medleys from popular songs that were injected into the creative direction of the play.
