Moulin Rouge – The Musical at Bass Concert Hall

In 2019, first showing at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 film Moulin Rouge was transformed into the now-famed live staging in Broadway. Originally created by Baz Luhrmann, it was brought to the stage by award-winning cast members like Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who originated the roles of Christian and Satine respectively, and production crew including director Alex Timbers and music scoring and orchestrations by Justine Levine, behind the main stage.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a show filled with the triumph of love against odds that touches on all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the end of the 1800s and at the height of Bohemianism, during the time period of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, tries to find his dream and inspiration. He dreams to set in motion a chance to succeed as a writer and journeys to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two new contacts, Lautrec and Santiago, who influence him to create a play that they can flaunt. It is in the hidden world of the Moulin Rouge nightclub where he meets Satine, the star of the Moulin Rouge that catches his eye and heart. Their budding relationship however faces an almost insurmountable obstacle in the person of the wealthy and corrupt Duke of Monroth, who is promised Satine by the nightclub’s proprietor Harold Zidler, in exchange for a large financial trade-off to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and improve the nightclub's standing. So begins Christian and Satine’s secret and tragic love affair on the live stage.

Basically a classical affair that remains a sure favorite even now, the show is also a mixture of both classical and modern music, putting together arrangements not just from the Baz Luhrmann's original, but also musical mash-ups and renditions from modern songs that were interlaced into the narrative of the musical.
