This breathtaking story revolves around two witches. Elphaba has green skin, while Glinda is beautiful with blond hair. The two young witches attend the same school and dislike each other at first. But they eventually form an unexpected bond and develop a wonderful friendship. The musical continues to follow these two friends from their girlhood, and it tells how these pair of witches turned into the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch. Based on the 1995 novel of the same title by Gregory Maguire, the musical features a storyline by Winnie Holzman and outstanding music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. The characters all dwell in the Land of Oz as Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship goes through several challenges due to different opinions, the same love interest, and opposing viewpoints from the corrupt government. Aside from the obvious challenges, the witches go through several complex themes, such as standards of beauty, self-love, and much, much more.
The original Broadway production premiered in 2003. Produced by Universal Stage Productions, Wicked brought in a remarkable creative team with the direction of Joe Mantello and choreography from Wayne Cilento. The original cast included Broadway superstars Joel Grey as the Wizard, Idina Menzel as Elphaba, and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda. Since its premiere in New York, Wicked has grown into the fourth longest-running show on Broadway, surpassing Cats. The production has brought numerous accolades, including three Tony Awards and seven Drama Desk Awards. Due to its overwhelming success, Wicked has had productions across the world, including London’s West End, Asia, and Australia. In 2023, Wicked celebrates its 20th anniversary. The musical has notably surpassed over $1 billion in Broadway revenue and joined massive productions, such as The Lion King and Phantom of the Opera, as some of the best-selling musicals of all time. Today, Wicked has had productions in 16 different countries.
“One of the best musicals I have ever seen.” – Cosmic Circus
In this upcoming 2023-2024 season, Wicked will travel to multiple cities across North America, including a coveted stop in Austin, Texas. The touring production will feature a stellar cast that includes Olivia Vali as Elphaba, Celia Hottenstein as Glinda, Timothy Shew as The Wizard, and Kathy Fitzgerald as Madame Morrible. The show will still feature the exemplary work of scenic designer Eugene Lee, costumes by Susan Hilfery, and lighting design by Kenneth Posner.
With various productions happening across the world, Wicked has professional critics raving about its incredible storyline, fantastic costumes, and outstanding music. Moreover, the trailblazing scenic design was praised for transporting audiences to the Land of Oz. The critic from USA Today had nothing but good words for the original 2003 production. “Wicked offers a post-feminist, socially conscious reinterpretation of the story of Oz’s Wicked Witch of the West. Though that may sound like a recipe for pretentious pedantry, writer Winnie Holzman, whose TV credits include Thirtysomething and My So-Called Life, provides a libretto that juggles winning irreverence with thoughtfulness and heart.” Meanwhile, Timeout New York described the musical as “lavishly designed” and praised the production for addressing complex themes such as “standards of beauty, individual morality, and opposing fascism.”
Same as the original production, the 2023 revival still holds the same power as it captivates audiences across the world. “Winnie Holzman’s book is so efficient that every single moment of it contributes, in some small way, to advancing either plot or character. Sure, there are plot holes, generalizations, and a few unearned motivational swings,” according to the Guardian. Over in London, Wicked is receiving phenomenal marks from critics. Timeout London went ahead to describe the musical as “stylish” and “bombastic.”
“Stylish and bombastic.” – Timeout London
